Every road out of Tbilisi, reviewed.
Which Kazbegi day actually gets you up to Gergeti. How many tastings a Kakheti wine run really pours. What a boat through Martvili costs. 1,047 tours in Georgia, written up in full.
Qvevri wine, cave cities and the Military Highway.
The road east into Kakheti, the climb to Gergeti Trinity, the canyons behind Kutaisi, the rock-cut town at Uplistsikhe and the palm-lined coast at Batumi. Georgian trips get built around this handful of days.
Georgia’s most booked days out.

Nine or ten tastings before the drive home is normal out here. These three carry the most travellers; the full list splits the rest by how far east you want to go.

Sighnaghi, Bodbe and the Alazani valley
Over the Gombori pass, a walled hill town with the Caucasus lined up behind it, a convent above the valley, then cellar after cellar down to the plain.
Tbilisi is where every Georgian itinerary starts.
Sulphur-bath domes under a cliff fortress, balconies leaning over the Mtkvari, a cable car up to Narikala and a wine bar on every second corner of the old town. Nearly every day trip in this country leaves from here too.
Two weeks in Georgia, in the order most people drive it.
The Military Highway climbs to 2,379 metres.
Ananuri fortress on the Zhinvali reservoir, the Aragvi gorge, the mosaic viewpoint above Gudauri, then Stepantsminda and the 4x4 grind up to Gergeti Trinity with Kazbek behind it. One road, one very long day.
Behind Kutaisi the ground opens up.
Martvili is a rubber boat between mossy walls, Okatse a walkway pinned to a cliff, Prometheus a lit kilometre of stalactites with an underground river at the end. Three of them fit in one day out of Kutaisi, and most tours try.

What a day in Georgia actually costs.
Every tour on the site, grouped by price. Georgia is cheap enough that the decision is rarely the money.
Group day trips, walking tours, cellar tastings and cave tickets. Most of Georgia lives in this band.
Small groups, cooking classes with the meal, the long hauls to Svaneti and Vardzia.
Three Georgian things with no equivalent anywhere.
Mountains and monasteries you can find across the Caucasus. Clay-buried wine, one road to the Russian border and a feast with a chairman belong to this country.

The Qvevri
Georgian wine ferments underground in a qvevri, a beeswax-lined clay vessel buried to the neck in the cellar floor. Skins, stems and juice all go in together, which is why so many of the whites come out amber. The method is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list and it is still how family cellars across Kakheti work. Tastings pour six to ten glasses, usually with bread and sulguni on the table.

The Georgian Military Highway
The Georgian Military Highway runs from Tbilisi to the Russian border through the Aragvi gorge, past the fortress at Ananuri and over the Jvari Pass at 2,379 metres. It ends at Stepantsminda, where a 4x4 grinds up the switchbacks to Gergeti Trinity church, alone on its ridge with Kazbek behind it. Almost every operator does the whole thing and gets you back the same night.

The Supra
A Georgian supra is a feast with a chairman. The tamada sets the toasts and the pace, and the pace is slower than you expect. Cooking classes build toward one: khinkali pleated by hand, khachapuri pulled out of the oven, walnut sauces on everything. The dumplings are picked up by the topknot, and the knot is the one part you leave on the plate.

Most of this country can be arranged from your guesthouse the night before. These cannot. They run on mountain passes, unpaved tracks and drives long enough that the day starts before dawn.
- 013 Day Tusheti Tour Explore Unspoiled WildernessThe Abano Pass into Tusheti is a summer-only road, roughly June to early October, and it is 4x4 only.
- 02Svaneti Mountain Villages 2-Day 4×4 SafariMestia is the far northwest corner of the country. These run as two-day and four-day trips, not as a spare afternoon.
- 03Rainbow Mountain & David Gareja Monastery TripThe monastery sits on the Azerbaijan border down a rough desert track, and the groups leave early to beat the heat.
- 04Borjomi, Rabati & Vardzia Adventure Guided TourVardzia is a four-hour drive each way from Tbilisi, so these are dawn departures with a fixed turnaround.
Batumi is one of the wettest corners of Europe. Plan for it.
The coast gets more than two metres of rain a year and Tbilisi springs are no drier. Every good answer is under something: a cellar with the qvevri under your feet, a kitchen table with dough on it, a lit kilometre of cave passage in Imereti.
